It’s simple. Monos are better for sailing, catamarans are better for living. So learn to sail both, then choose based on your goals :)

Since you're using the anchor as a control while backing, how would the same thing be accomplished with a free fall windlass? My boat currently has a free fall windlass which means there's no control of speed when dropping the hook, additionally I shouldn't engage the gears on the gypsy wheel when chain or rode is splaying out.

Honestly terrible spot between those super yachts, if depth was good enough i would go to that little spot starboard of that bigger superyacht;) Also i personally avoid 90 degree turn while dropping, if there is enough space go far and aproach in straight line, even with cross winds you have more controll where is your anchor and its much easier not to cross chain with anyone.

How far ( 20 degree ?) should we allow the boat to heel ? To be efficient and fastest speed , would it be without heeling ,? i.e. the hual is flat on water surface ?

Your instruction would be more valuable if most of the time the camera is aiming at the sail, traveller, the sheet instead of the instructors' face. Thanks

just curious... why wouldn't you (or wouldn't they) start with a bowline through cleat? It makes smaller cleats less congested, IMHO.

No one is operating an anchor barefoot on my watch. The deck is can be slippery and I hate to see those bare toes so close to the winch. But that’s my take, love the content.

Wow, I've never seen a bowline and sheet bend tied that way before. I practiced that for a couple hours and it's crazy how fast and simple it is.

what if the boat doesn't back straight like yours obviously does (presumed has a fin keel and spade rudder or some such..vs full keel with an aperture for the skeg hung rudder? ...advice?

I prefer to use my midship cleat with a line first. That will keep the boat controlled whilst I tie the for and aft lines

If you are anchoring, it’s important to understand the tidal swing so you have enough scope out at high tide. Here in the Pacific Northwest of the US, it’s not uncommon to have a 13 foot swing (4 meters) . If you anchor at low tide at 5:1 scope you won’t have enough scope at high tide. This is a common error people make and then wonder why they drag…..

When is best to avoid huge waves? I.e. in a slack tide when flood comes in there is a huge disturbance of water coming in. Is it better to avoid the initial rush of water or avoid the 3/12th of flood range or wait the hour or two before the flood starts to change to Ebb and it’s like at 2/12 to 1/12. For context in the Caribbean I noticed that you can get huge waves if you don’t time it right however I haven’t figured out when it’s best to avoid huge waves for comfort of passengers. Nobody really talks about this even the training I took that covered tides doesn’t really talk about waves and water disturbance. Obviously flood against wind is not good, however I am trying just to figure it out when it’s best to plan the journey taking tides and waves into account? If I have new passengers on board they would appreciate this vs. traumatizing then with an uncomfortable experience. Thank you 🙏

One thing not mentioned - altho' I'm sure James was doing it - is to manage the approach with an eye to putting the stern NOT on the dock generally but on the spot on the dock where that first cleat is located. Just like, when landing a plane, you don't do your approach to land somewhere on the runway but rather you do your approach to land at a specific spot on the runway.

Ah, so it's a med moor without the med mooring lines. Nicely done. OTOH not all of us have a fin/skeg underbody, can turn on a dime or back straight under significant power.

I’m New Zealand coast guards volunteer.we are using Navionics on daily basis but paper charts, bearing taking, 3 points fix, chartplotter ruler are the basics for seamanship that every sailor should know and practice.
